Huron County Ohio- History
The county of Huron was formed in 1809 out of portion of the area known as the Connecticut Reserve. The area of Huron was known specifically as the Firelands. The county was names after the Huron Indians that lived in the area.
The Northwest Ordinance of 1787 eliminated most of the lands claimed by individual states. The Firelands area was a exception to this change. This region was given as compensation to those resident of Connecticut that had lost their homes during the Revolutionary War due the activities of the British army. This is why the majority of the people living in this area can trace their genealogical roots back to New England.
Tomorrow I will cover a library in the area. Have a great day.
